The village of Butiama is the birthplace of Tanzania’s founding president, Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere (1922 – 1999). A tour of Butiama includes visits to the Mwalimu J.K. Nyerere Museum, a visit to his library of more than 8,000 books, and a visit to his mausoleum. Butiama has numerous other attractions.
Located near the south-eastern shores of Lake Victoria, the third largest fresh water lake in the world, Butiama is less than an hour’s drive to the World-famous Serengeti National Park, offering visitors combined tours to the Ngorongoro Crater, a World Heritage Site, and to Lake Manyara National Park.
Part of the Butiama tour introduces the visitor to the cultural heritage of the Zanaki ethnic group.
