There are more than five good reasons to visit Butiama. We share five with you. Butiama is the birthplace of Tanzania’s founding president, Mwalimu Julius Nyerere (1922 – 1999). It is located in the south-eastern part of Lake Victoria.

One: Proximity to the Serengeti National Park

The Serengeti National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is just within the neighborhood. Ndabaka Gate, the Serengeti’s entrance at the western tip of the park is only an hour’s drive away. Two: A rich historical and cultural heritage

As birthplace and burial site for Tanzania’s founding president, Mwalimu Julius Nyerere, Butiama is a leading visitor destination in Tanzania. Some of its attractions include the Mwalimu J.K. Nyerere Museum, dedicated solely to his political legacy. His mausoleum is located on the grounds of his residence which houses his personal library of more than 8,000 books.

Butiama is home to the Zanaki ethnic group, providing the visitor an opportunity to learn the customs and traditions of this small community. A visit to Butiama will include viewing of traditional dances of both the Zanaki and neighboring ethnic groups.

Three: Lake Victoria excursions

Butiama is less than an hour’s drive to Lake Victoria. We offer tour boat excursions to some of the numerous islands on the lake to view the lives and activities of the island fishing communities.

How to get to Butiama

Inbound foreign flights arrive in Tanzania through Moshi’s Kilimanjaro International Airport (KIA) or Dar es Salaam’s Julius Nyerere International Airport (JNIA). Both airports have connections to either Musoma, the nearest location to Butiama, or to Mwanza, the next nearest location.

Visitors who enter Tanzania from Kenya through the Sirari border post are only an hour away by road from Butiama.
